Any advice from anyone who has taken or is preparing to take Step 1 this summer would be really appreciated.

I've been trying to follow a study schedule my school's advisor and I put together, not working at all. I'm trying to get through Biochemistry using BRS; I feel like I am totally standing still. I don't remember anything I review, there is so much I have no idea where to focus... First Aid just doesn't seem like it's enough but as I get more into this, it seems like First Aid may be all I have time to review since I have to move onto other subjects at this point. My Qbank performance is dismal. I'm not sure if I'm trying to "know" too much and I need to just focus more on First Aid or what. Any thoughts, suggestions, advice... thanks.

If your problem is just Biochem, then I would highly recommend buying the Kaplan Biochem book and making that your Bible for 4-5 days. You'll be a Step I biochem master after that, and you can pretty much ignore what's in FA at that point. Just make sure you go through the whole thing, genetics and all. I really can't recommend it highly enough. I didn't understand biochem at all until I read that book, and I was scoring ~40% for Biochem Qbank. By the time I took the real thing, the biochem questions seemed ridiculously easy.

If your problems are more than just Biochem, PM me.

Good luck,

HamOn

Hello,

Are you referring to the medEssentials Biochemistry section or is there another book? Any idea where you can find that? I can never find anything on Kaplan's website. 😛

Thank you!

My guess is that Ham is referring to the Biochem Lecture Notes that are part of the 7-volume Lecture Note series that goes with some of their courses. This is not the MedEssentials notes.

Ham, correct me if I'm wrong...

I'm referring to the Biochem book they sell as part of their total step I review package. They're the books that supplement the lectures that Kaplan provides, but I know that you can buy the set of books seperately (without buying the whole review course) for like $600 or something. I was able to find the biochem book seperately on ebay, but I don't think Kaplan will sell you just the one book. You'll have to buy the whole set, or do what I did.

Good luck,

Do we still need to read HY cell/molecular bio if we master the kaplan biochem?

i just finished reading FA biochem, and it's a b!tch, particularly the last metabolism part. all those pathways are killer.
