FA 2014, p591: "ketoconazole and spironolactone are used in the treatment of PCOS to prevent hirsutism. Both have side effects of gynecomastia and amenorrhea."

Kaplan Card (gotten from google search) says exact opposite:

They both block androgen production, which helps with hirsutism in women, but causes gynecomastia in men, which makes sense. I don't get the effect on menstruation though.
Anyone have an explanation?

Perhaps blocking androgen production decreases conversion to estrogen via aromatase, which decreases negative feedback on the pituitary, increases gonadotropin release and restoring the normal regulation of hormones. Something like that.

Perhaps it's just Kaplan errata. Katzung Pharma also says that Spironolactone can cause "menstrual abnormalities". Also Spironolactone decreases 17-hydroxylase activity, which is necessary for estrogen production.

Yeah I mean I've never heard of using spironolactone as a treatment for amenorrhea in PCOS (or any other disorder), just hirsutism. I think assuming it'll mess all that crap up is a safer bet then it somehow being able to fix it. Thanks.
