Hi there, I'll be starting in the Integrated Life Science PhD track at the University of Georgia this year (focusing in infectious disease). I just got an unsolicited email from "Beth Rosner, Science Magazine." Here are the first couple lines from the email:

"Dear Colleague:

Congratulations! Dr. Dorsey has nominated you for participation in the AAAS/Science Program for Excellence in Science. This program rewards deserving graduate students, medical students, and postdocs working in the life sciences with a two-year sponsored membership in AAAS/Science at no cost to you."

Has anyone else in research circles received this email or one similar to it? I don't know any Dr. Dorsey. It kind of sounded like a solicitation of some sort. Anyone know about AAAS? Is it an organization worth pursuing a relationship with?

I googled the title you gave and read the advertisement. It's a free pass to be a member of their society to get exclusive junk mail and junk offerings. You can sign up in case they have some funding opportunity or junk offer of interest, but it doesn't appear to be anything prestigious - they have an 'application form' online and I doubt they turn down anybody.

Hmm, I somehow got excited for you, because I'm a graduate in Molecular Medicine and thought at first that the Science magazine offers an internship or some kind of scholarship. Now I'm sad.
