I am highly interested in doing both PM&R and a fellowship once I graduate from med school. I wasn't very familiar with it until I did an observership this past summer and absolutely enjoyed it. My question is that I am highly interested in Sports medicine and I noticed that there are very few "sports med" fellowships available for PM&R docs. Do other sports med programs that take primary care physicians not accept PM&R docs? What would be the difference in my training in doing a Sports vs. a MSK fellowship? Are there MSK fellowships out there that train with any type of empahsis on sports? Any other info related to these topics would be helpful.

Primary care sports med. fellowships generally are not open to physiatrists as far as I know. They are also more geared toward internists and family practitioners who also serve as team physicians.

PM&R sports med programs focus on sports injury rehab/conditioning in addition to acute injury management. In my opinion, physiatrists have a better understanding of kinesiology and the kinetic chain, a huge plus when conditioning athletes and treating overuse syndrome e.g. tendonitis, shin splints, etc.

If you want to find PM&R sports med fellowship, join PASSOR once you start residency. There are a few purely sports-med PM&R fellowships but most are combined sports/interventional spine, or MSK/sports.

Musculoskeletal fellowships may or may not include sports. "Musculoskeletal" is a broad term and can include sports, occupational rehab/worker's comp and geriatric MSK.

CSSOR, Wash U, MSU, Kessler, Beth Israel, Buffalo, Stanford, Mayo, & Hopkins offer predominantly sports-oriented fellowships, and that is just off the top of my head.
