Hi guys,

i am going to be applyin to dental schools this summer. My wife and I are living together and she is in her second year into her Dental Hygiene bachelors degree. If I go out of state, we will be apart for a year.

Is there anyone who is married please share their experience. How was it being apart? Also, did you talk to the schools in the state your spouse was in and explain them your situation?

Advice Advice Advice

P.S. there are no kids involved

Several of my classmates are in this situation. In fact, one of my classmates won't live with his wife the ENTIRE four years!

She is on military duty stationed in California, while he is here in Arizona. They see each other during the breaks, and it is a 7 hour drive to see her, so it's doable for him if they have more than a weekend.

I'll try to get more info for you.

It's frustrating but doable. My hubby is in Canada and I am in Cali, we see each other twice a year. Its tough but time does fly.

I didnt, but I dont think they'd really care.

Wow. I just got engaged, but I don't think that'd work well at all for Rachel and me in the long term. Good luck to anyone undertaking the challenge 😀

Dude, if she is only in her second year of a 4 year degree for Dental Hygiene, have her bail on her degree and get a job supporting you while you goto Dental school. That way if you are out of state you can maybe get in-state tuition. Then in 4 years, when you start making some money she can go back to school or.....not. Compare what a hygienist makes with what the average DDS makes.
I spent time away from my wife in the military and it almost did us in. The Navy has a high divorce rate for that very reason. Besides the money she will bring in will reduce both of your debt burdens.
Do what you want but......how would you feel if you went to school for four years, and you guys lived apart...then she died.

Spend time together.

If she only has a year left in her program then strike all of the above and suck it up!

My wife and I are both applying to dental school right now. We are hoping to get accepted into the same school so we won't have to live apart. Hopefully, we will achieve our goal Dec. 1st!

Hi Abina81
Don't let her quit, that would be very selfish!! you guys are only one year apart... it is not like you will spend four years apart but in the long run you will both have the careers you wished for...

About supporting you!!! I think having a degree to work better than leaving it in the middle and get a minimum wage job!!!

Good luck, I think you have nothing toworry about!! time flies by very fast...

Sal 🙂

I'm planning a wedding now and won't be around my gal for another year.

Although I do see her about once a month. I find great deals on continental, flew from Newark to Ft. Lauderdale for $79...thats with taxes and round trip.

We only see each other for weekends and only when there are flight specials, which you will find atleast once a month between all the carriers. I haven't paid more than $130 total yet for a flight...gotta love those last min deals

where are you finding these last min. deals and WHERE do you find the time to visit that often?

just go to the airline webpages. For instance, continental has a specials page and many others do too. The Continental specials change every week and are up from late monday until late fri. During the weekend the specials page is down.

Their is plenty of time. If I have big exams, then I don't go. If I have a normal week then I go. There is time if you make it. I do bring my laptop and do work while I see her so it isn't all fun and games.

And she comes when ever she has a break in rotations.

I am also married, and my husband will have to look for a job if I get accepted. If he cannot find one, I guess we will have to live apart for a while. I am hoping this will not happen, but I am sure that I will move no matter what. I think it pays off in the end...
