Since I am in surgery I don't have the time to contact programs, would it be wrong if your spouse/so called programs to check on your status or ask programs to upload available documents?

I'm not sure how well it would reflect on you to have someone else do your leg work. A lot of medical students are in similar situations and still manage to take care of all the communication. (Although, in retrospect most students probably try to avoid scheduling time-intensive rotations during interview season, but that's water under the bridge at this point).

Are you really in surgery from 8-5 nonstop? Most people have at least a few minutes in between cases to take care of bidness, so to speak. Do you not even have time to grab a 5-min lunch or use the bathroom? It only takes 5 minutes to call a program. Do it from the stall, they won't know. We're 4th year students, priority #1 is getting in to a residency.

Also, programs download documents automatically with ERAS, they shouldn't have to do it manually, so you don't have to worry about that part at least.

True, but programs would have to retrieve it. So should I find the time in the stalls to call these programs to ask them to retrieve my last lor?

It depends on how much time you have in there, you have to prioritize.

I'm still not sure what you mean by "retrieve" it. Everything should end up in your file automatically. Whether or not they read it is a different question, and probably dependent on whether or not they've already looked at your application. If you have an update that you think adds something, it might be worthwhile to shoot them an email reminding them that you have a new LOR, or an update to your CAF, or something else pertinent. But they shouldn't need any prompting to download or retrieve anything.

Overall, I would say that if you're in a time-crunch, I'd only spend the time contacting programs if it were something pretty significant (AOA, LOR from a dept chair, great Step 2) and I would concentrate on the programs you really want to be at.

Every time they log onto ERAS, everything that they haven't already downloaded gets downloaded, automagically. Even if you've been rejected (or filtered out such that they'll never look at your file no matter what), that LOR (or MSPE or PS or whatever) goes into your electronic file. If they haven't received your stuff, they haven't received a lot of other people's stuff.

I would say this is a terrible idea. First of all I think it is totally unnecessary to check your status with every program. Second you seem confused about how the ERAS upload/download process occurs. Third if you must call, I think it will look weird to have your wife do the calling for you.

👍 Couldn't have said it better myself.

I agree with above.

You could e-mail the program coordinator and say:

1. remain very interested in the program(s)
2. that a new LOR has been added to your ERAS file

Signed,

Your name
AAMC ID

You can easily fire off a couple of e-mails before or after work.

Best wishes :luck:

First, I am not interested in checking with every program, just the three that I am really interested in and have not heard back from yet. Second, the last time I checked, my lor has been posted but says not retrieved from the program. Lastly, my husbandwon't be calling...it was a passing thought because I have been so busy...even for #2.

The "not retrieved" thing is what makes us say that you don't understand how ERAS works... if they haven't retrieved your additional LOR, they haven't retrieved ANY APPLICANT'S information since the last time they downloaded. They do not selectively download certain things from certain people... every single time they log on to ERAS to download, they download ALL AVAILABLE INFORMATION. So if it says not retrieved, that just means they haven't logged onto ERAS yet. Not that they haven't logged onto YOUR APP... that they haven't logged on at all. So it's annoying for you to tell them they need to download your LOR... they'll download it (and everyone else's new information) when they're ready.
