  1. Pre-Podiatry
Hi all-

I was curious as to if any current pod students or recently accepted students (those entering this summer '10) were finishing up their pre-reqs at the time of their application. I'm looking at applying at the beginning of next year, but I don't know where I would stand with regards to having one pre-req class left at the time of my application. Most schools have rolling admissions, so I know that they state on their websites that as long as you finish the courses by the spring semester (before the summer semester of matriculation) with a grade of C or better that it shouldn't be a problem (i.e. you could get an conditional acceptance), but I was curious if anyone had been in that position. If so, I'd like to PM you about your experiences especially anyone that applied in the spring. Thanks!

It seems pretty common to get accepted and still be in school. At my interviews I always met people who hadn't finished their undergrad yet. I am not done yet and I am starting at AZPOD this fall. I am graduating in april. They just expect me to graduate before the spring semester. I hadn't finished my physics when I interviewed and was accepted. It didn't seem like a problem at all.

It's not a problem at all. Schools will simply ask you to send a final transcript before you matriculate...and don't fail your prereq.

I was about to start a new thread for this one, but this seems to be relevant enough to post here.

What about a master's student currently in the first year of his research / graduate program? Say he knows that podiatry is what he would like to pursue at this point and applies early in Sept. and is interviewed / accepted for next year's fall start. There is still 1-1.5 years left in his master's program at this point, and perhaps a graduate course or two in progress (Sept. start).

Would most pod schools accept the deposit at unconditional accepetance and not require (or care for that matter) the student to finish the masters program? In other words, no penalty for the student to leave the graduate program and focus on getting prepared / moving / etc. for the podiatry program to start in the coming fall?

No schools require you to do graduate studies. That being said if you are currently doing graduate studies the best thing to do would be to call and talk to the people in admissions at the schools you are applying to. People drop out of graduate programs all the time to enter other programs, but just be sure you are doing what the admissions advisors recommend. I don't think it will be a problem if your undergrad scores are good and mcat is ok.

I may be incorrect, but I'm pretty sure that Western is the only school that requires the prereqs to be completed by the spring semester prior to matriculation. All other schools simply require that they be completed prior to matriculation.

I was in your situation right around this time last year. I had already completed 1.5 years of a two year graduate program and I thought about jumping ship to just apply to podiatry schools in the 2008-2009 cycle so that I could enter school in the Fall of 2009.

I contacted NYCPM, OCPM, and Scholl and told them about my situation and what I was thinking about doing and they told me that they would not hold it against me if I decided to leave my graduate program early to start podiatry school in the Fall of '09.

After much contemplation I came to the conclusion that I had already paid 3/4 of the tuition to complete the program and I felt I owed it myself to get my MS in Biological Sciences...so I ended up sticking it out and getting my degree. I applied this current cycle and was accepted at Scholl.

Who knows, depending on what your stats are, maybe finishing up and getting your MS will help you get into the podiatry school of your choice. In most situations it prob doesn't matter but just incase your undergrad gpa or MCAT score is lower then avg, I think an upper level degree in the sciences will help boost your application.

Good Luck

At AZPOD they told me it had to be done before the spring semester. The best way to go is to call. That way you can be sure.
