Hey guys and gals,
Just curious if anyone has any insight on St. Luke's Hospital? It's the one in Bethlehem, PA. I just got offered an interview there today and would like to hear some opinions about the place. Thanks!

I spent 3 months at St. Lukes for surgery as a med student and interviewed there for residency. Overall its a good program, Level 1 trauma center, strong ultrasound focus (the residency director is very big on u/s), residents seem happy. As far as I know, its an MD/DO dual accredidation (sp?), as are most/all the programs at St. Lukes.

Bethlehem is a cute town - small and family oriented near Allentown. Its about 1 hour from Philly. Not the most happening social scene (though it does exist), but easy access to the ski slopes.

Wasn't right for me mostly based on location (I'm more of a city gal), but its a good program, residents are mostly happy, and the faculty seemed strong. If you have any specific questions, let me know - I'll try to answer 🙂

Wow! Interviews are already being given out!? Congratulations! I was offered an interview there but declined it several weeks into the process.

Thanks for the prompt replies you two. Yeah, I have applied all over the US since I do not have any ties. I need a place with balance: outdoor activities and city life. It's close to Philly and NYC so I will give it a shot.
If either of you know, how do the residents there compare to other places? Are they happy there? And ups and downs about the program? Thanks again.

Interesting you should say that because I think that they are required to wear shirt and ties throughtout the program (no scrubs).
Very true... I totally forgot about that. They did a study on patient perception based on attire and decided everyone needed to look professional. That's a lot of drycleaning bills, if you ask me...

I don't even want to know what my ties would be colonized with by the end of residency. A buddy of mine from med school went there. I'll ask him to culture his wardrobe. 😀

I liked Dr. Heller a lot, and the residents seemed happy despite the dress code. (I think they loved the big paychecks...)

Bethlehem was NOT my ideal locale though. Needed to be closer to a city than an hour drive.

i am always slightly amused (and slightly grossed out) when i see a physician wearing a tie, bending over a patient while examing them and the tie gets to collect all sort of bacteria to delivery to the next patient.

One of my classmates did a research project on this as an undergrad. She went around swabbing various doctor attire (now if that isn't a fun job, what is?). She found ties and pagers as the most common bugged offenders, not suprisingly.

She was actually pretty funny. I thought of her as the pager nazi 'cause she was always grabbing my pager and wiping it down with alcohol. Too bad that never killed the pager, though.

Take care,
Jeff

PS, congrats on the early interview!
