Trans is stable
But has a lower BP

what accounts for that discrepency??
I know the face, but just would like to understand it, I think my reasoning is a little messed up...

Trans is stable because it eliminates steric hinderance....so the molecule itself if stable
But in BP/MP we are talking about interaction wth other molecules like itself, and therefor, the polar molecules will be more stable?

I don't know.

my thoughts on this is for example, trans 1,2-dichloroethane compared to cis. Trans is more stable because of the hindrance but lower bp because there are no net dipoles. dipole-dipole interactions will increase bp.

ya this is kinda tricky, trans has higher melting points becuz of there symmetry (stablity as you put it) but they also have lower boiling points becuz they are less polar!!!
