which two are most stable?

1. cis 1,4 dimethylcyclohexane
2. trans 1,4 dimethylcyclohexane
3. cis 1,3 dimethylcyclohexane
4. trans 1,3 dimethylcyclohexane

answer is 2 & 3.

I know why 2 is. but what about 3?

When both are in the equitorial position = stable.
2 and 3 both allow the methyl groups to be both in equitorial positions.
