Is there a huge emphasis on tumor staging on Step 1?

I have a Pathology professor that likes to emphasize staging for each type of tumor and I'm having difficulty remembering the specifics. It all seems to be more important for my clinical years though.

I realize I have to learn it eventually but now that Step 1 is approaching I want to make sure I focus on the important things.

No, it's not that important. You have to know what TNM is all about, and that mets are the worst prognostically. Know that grading the tumor is about its differentiation/invasion (for example, that muscle invasion is a sign of malignancy vs. a well-differentiated, non-invasive tumor). FA has a decent small overview, and Goljan talks about it too if you have access to those.
