Has anyone found examples of patient scenarios/symptoms on the web? I need some practice before I meet my first standardized patient on Wednesday! Any help is greatly appreciated!

You don't need any practice. If you manage to introduce yourself and make it out of the room without a nervous breakdown, then it's a successful first encounter. They just want to see if you can talk to strangers. You're not expected to have skills beyond paying attention to what the pt. says. Relax, be yourself, and good luck.

Just make sure you knock on the door, walk in with confidence, shake hands with patient, introduce yourself as SeptemberStar, a 1st year medical student, get to know the patient (don't ask how are you doing b/c ECM teaches us not to do this, even though this is what we do all the time in the hospital), ask them about the weather, where they are from, any children, what they dof for a living, etc. then after a minute or so ask them what brings them in. That's all you need. As said before, just relax and be yourself. I know it is nerve wracking at first, but in the overall picture, it really doesn't matter.

If the patient seems like they are in pain, then don't spend time getting to know them. Introduce yourself and say I noticed that you look like you are in pain. Is that true? then proceed with questions.

I'm surprised they have you deal with standardized patients before white coat ceremony.

Hany

I went through my whole first year dealing with real and standardized patients and my white coat ceremony is this October, at the start of my second year.

Remember to wash your hands before performing any phyical exam.

Agree with Soup -- The whole point of a standardized patient is that it IS the practice, before you see real patients. Unlike your lectures, where you can learn by watching, reading, etc., this is a skill you can only learn by doing.

Agree with other posters that the best practice is interacting with patients, that said, you can practice your flow by getting together with a group and doing physical exams on eachother. Probably should be a close friend that you're playing doctor with 😀

To get yourself thinking about your assessment, ddx, and plan get First Aid Step 2 CS, it's got lots of scenarios.

It's challenging enough to land one person who lets you "play doctor' with them -- lots of luck lining up a group (orgy).
