I am in a master's program in clinical psychology and am trying to make sense of the results of a recent assessment that I conducted using the SB-5 and the WJ-III Ach with an elementary school child. The child has a discrepancy between his VIQ and PIQ with his VIQ exceeding his PIQ by 22 points. His PIQ is in the average range and his VIQ is in the superior range. All subtests, with the exception of quantitative reasoning in the verbal domain, fell within the superior range. Oddly enough, his verbal and nonverbal Visual Spatial scores fell within the superior range. All other testlets on the SB-5 nonverbal section were average.
On the WJ-III Ach, he scored in the superior and very superior range on many subtests, but consistently on those tests that measured mathematics. His lowest score on the Binet was on quantitative reasoning (QR) where he scored in the average range on the verbal QR section and in the high average range on the nonverbal QR section. I have read the training manuals for both batteries and cannot figure out why his QR ability is in the avg range when his math achievement consistently falls in the superior and very superior range. Math reportedly comes easily to him.
A simple answer to this child's overall profile would be that his verbal abilities are better developed than are his nonverbal abilities. I have never seen this profile in a child where visual spatial skills fall in the superior range. Any ideas? I am in a bit of a time crunch...if this does not make sense, I will reword later.
Thanks a million for any input/suggestions, etc!
