So, I'm really happy that I'll be starting residency at Stanford this year, but I'm starting to feel kind of nauseated at the rental prices there. When I interviewed, the residents told me that they mostly live at Stanford West or Welch Road apartments. Stanford West rents 1 bedrooms for $1720!!! I don't know how any resident affords this unless they have a second income!? The prices at Welch Rd seem more reasonable, but I was really hoping for a place with a washer/dryer in the unit (key during residency, IMHO).

Are there any Stanford med students or residents out there that can provide advice on good places to live near campus, apartment complexes that you've liked, etc? Or are there good areas to live in surrounding communities that have an easy bike/short car commute to campus?

Many thanks in advance!

yeah, stanford west and welch road are rather expensive... but such is the price of living so near to campus. i, on the other hand, live about 10-15 minutes away by car, south on el camino (towards los altos/mountain view).

i don't think we're supposed to advertise other sites but i'll take the flak and endorse craigslist to find the place where i'm living at now ($1050 for a 1 bedroom). it should be reasonably easy to find a decently priced apartment in the area.

Hey shambala -- congrats on matching at stanford 🙂
when I interivewed there -- the residents mentioned some kind of subsidized apartments that you can enter a lottery for -- that might be an option. i know they are w/in walking distance of the campus.

good luck! 😍

ShambhalaRed, congrats on the Stanford match! I'm a current Stanford med student. You can find much better deals than Stanford West if you look around and are willing to live a few minutes from campus. My current apt in Menlo park (less than a 10 min drive from campus or a 20 minute bike ride) is $1200/month for 2 bdrms (share with a roommate). There are a number of similar deals in Menlo Park. Mountain Vew (more like a 15-20 min drive to campus) or Redwood City (also about 20 min away) tend to be cheaper than Palo Alto as well. I'd second the suggestion of checking out Craigslist, or once you have a Stanford account log on to the Community Housing webpage and check out the postings. Good luck!
