hey,
had a similar question to someone's in the anesthesia forum so kinda copied his/her post: I am very interested in stanford due to its location, reputation, and quality of education.

There are no reviews of stanford surgery on Scutwork, so would you please answer a few questions?

1. How's the teaching?

2. Is it more clinical, didactic, or a good mix of both?

3. What's the atmosphere like?

4. What's the schedule during residency?

5. Do you have an overall "feeling" about the program (if you're in it)?

6. Lastly, REALLY, just HOW competitive is it getting into Stanford surgery? (USMLE Step 1, Class Rank, Letters from whom, DO vs. MD, etc.)

I got a 246 step 1, honors in the rotation, but have no publications in any related field. have done some research before med school on related topics but did horribly and so that resulted in no papers. i think i can get decent-good recs, but am worried about my lack of research exp. what do you think? for family reasons I'd like to be in the bay area, so stanford is currently my number one choice.

Anything anybody could share would be much appreciated. thanks!

come on .. no stanford residents on this whole forum? maybe that says something 🙂.
seriously though, i'd really appreciate a response. if not abt stanford, how about other calif schools?

athough palo alto is beautiful, and there are plenty of top surgeons at stanford (many who have fled UCSF in the last few years), the training program is not that good. if you are commited to pursuing cardiac surgery then it might be worth it, but the general surgery training is not that good.
