Ok so I'm a member of the Starcraft Collegiate League where different universities face each other (basically a varsity sports team). I'm in the master league which is top 2% in the world in terms of ranking. Could this be included in my dental school application? oh btw im like my team's "co-captain".

what do u think?

What !

Really !

Starcraft of all games !

This has no eye hand coordination action. The call if duty games I would have said yes to and even Tetris !

Well, I have no idea what they think, but as a fellow Starcraft addict (recovering) I would think it was awesome. Used to brag about how I could get out 2 zealots before you could get 6 zerglings. Won a few local competitions. You are obviously out of my league though.

lol I'm out of ur league? dude I've competed in tons of CSL tournaments and I'm ranked pretty darn high.

Remember, these are 40-50 year old faculty who will be evaluating your application. They are pretty much your parents' age.

Would it be something that your parents will brag about to their friends, or hang their heads in shame?

But the strategy, stats and map memorization, and muscle memory to perform rapid keystrokes to make several moves happen in an instant, make it way tougher.

Star craft is like command and conquer, there is nothing that skillfull needed to win.

But with call of duty aiming at the opponents switching weapons, running and jumping steady thumbs plus what ever you wrote above .

With Tetris it is almost like the pat .

Dude totally put it on your app. It will give everyone who ever sees it a huge laugh and make their day. Plus, it will make it that much easier for one of your fellow applicants to get in.

I can't believe people even consider these things.

This is unique and i think also shows your competitive nature and leadership. although some may view it as frivolous, i think it's a unique feature about you that might set yourself apart. As long as you can explain yourself well of what you learned from this experience, i think you can definitely use this to your advantage.

dont disrespect, some people make a living off playing starcraft like any other sports.

I honestly cant tell......Is this a joke?

And NO, being a member of some video-gaming club is not comparable to being on a varsity sports team.

Honestly, it is. However, people just don't give it credit. It is similar to how some people don't consider NASCAR a sport.

Unfortunately, I don't think it will look like a positive on your CV. It sucks, but whatevs.

This, x1000. Seriously, think about this. Think about the general population of people aged 40-60. Video games and professional school? Like someone else said, it would give them a huge laugh. I wouldn't want anyone laughing at my application in any sense. I know some people here think otherwise, but I would not put this on my application. Just like applying to a job, you have to tailor your applications to the people looking at them. No one from the video game demographic works in dental school admissions.

Your app is screened by a 20 something who reads your personal statement and then puts you into the "look into further" pile. List Starcraft by harping on the fact youre top 2% in the world at something without divulging its a video sport and it could definitely help. I wouldnt list it if it was the only line item though. Put between 3-4 other things would round your app out nicely. Most dental schools try to make a very diverse class and this would be a good mark, not a point of ridicule.

Alot of dental students take themselves entirely too seriously as this thread is showing.

Many young people assume people get old and become out of touch. They assume because the older person is the hard liner, is where "the buck stops", and generally has to enforce rules that its because they dont see things the way young people do. In most cases this is wrong. They are that way because they bear the responsibility. Your 55 year old dean isnt stupid. He knows what the internet is. He sees technology changing at an exponential rate. He knows video games have been around for 25 years....

My friend actually put video games as an EC on his applications and was granted several interviews. He had other ECs as well though.

OP is a clever troll and all of you are falling for it

I would totally do it, being ranked that high in video games is always underestimated but personally i respect it 😀 people who aren't gamers don't understand how many hours of practice goes into certain games, especially strategy games. these aren't games you play when you're tired and want to relax, they are games that make you think.

No one that will be reading your application will understand SC2 nor appreciate what it means to play in ML. Even people from your own generation (DS, Pre-Dents alike) who were around video games for the majority of their lives still label it as laughable accomplishment; what makes you think people much older than you with a far lesser understanding of video games would view it any differently?

BTW, ML = Top 2% in a region. You're not in the top 2% of the world, nor remotely close to it.

Why don't you just put video games down as an EC? If they ask about it, you can explain more in detail. I don't think you need to be that specific - 'Starcraft' is sort of an unusual thing to put down. Then again, it is taken more seriously as a sport in other countries so that argument could be made too.

Let's say you played something like WoW or Call of Duty. Even if you were really, really, good, say the best player in the world, would you be comfortable listing those, knowing the stigma they carry?
