Tufts has you assisting in the clinic as soon as the first semester. But I don't think you get your own patients until the end of d2.

Iowa and VCU do...all though you do not play a major role. I think UoP might as well since they have a three year program but don't quote me on that...

Many schools will have you assist, do prophy, sealants, etc. With the exception of UoP, I don't know if there are any schools that let you diagnose and treat during D1 or even D2.

Being in clinic early isn't very beneficial unless you're clocking in a good amount of hours. Many schools will tell you that you start off in clinic in your first year, but only have you there like once a month, if that. I don't know about other schools, but at Penn, you start as a Dental Auxiliary in the second semester of D1, and then you become an Expanded Function Dental Assistant in your D2 year. You're in clinic ~3x/week.

Buffalo- During the 1st year, students spend one afternoon at the clinic.

During the second year:

"In the fall semester of the second year, students spend one afternoon each week treating periodontal recall patients (patients who have completed periodontal therapy at the school and return for periodic evaluation). With the guidance of faculty, students review patients' medical histories, perform oral examinations, evaluate their periodontal status, and provide oral prophylaxis and home-care instructions. Second-year students also assist third- and fourth-year students, which allows second-year students to become familiar with the operation of the clinics and to observe the practical application of principles presented in their preclinical courses.

In the spring semester, students are assigned to one of four practice groups for the remainder of their clinical training. Students spend three half-days each week in the clinic and are assigned between four and eight patients with selective needs to begin the clinical experience in restorative dentistry. Under the guidance of faculty, students learn the basics of diagnosis, treatment planning, and local anesthesia as they prepare and restore teeth with amalgam, composite resin, and cast restorations and provide periodontal therapy."

Pretty sure at LSU you start doing clinic as a D2 and start getting your own patients near the end.

Stony Brook 2nd year students start seeing patients in clinic in November. The entirety of 2nd year clinic consists of exams + radiographs, prophies, and operative. There's also a surgery rotation and a requirement of a couple extractions.

Children's clinic starts around February 2nd year (all procedures).
