Just wondered how much money I should plan on having saved for before school starts. I thought loan money didn't get dispersed until the first day of classes (please correct me if I'm wrong). I'm probably looking at a move, so I'm gonna need to pay first month's rent and possibly a deposit... anything else major we can think of? I really want to take a nice, relaxing vacation before school starts so I'm trying to budget for that and also see how long I need to continue working.

i'm having issues with this as well. i guess it depends on what your living situation will be.

i'm married and will obviously be living alone with my husband. we have no furniture outside of a bed pretty much, so we'll have to budget for that. plus, i want a tv and need a laptop.

i'm hoping to have 3k saved for the major stuff and use loans to buy the laptop and little stuff that i need. i know at baylor they budget 6k for books and supplies.

in my case, i'm working up until 2 weeks before i move to maximize the earnings.

I'm planning to have 4K set aside for startup costs. (things that come to mind are moving expenses, rent, deposit, costs of having cable/internet/electricity turned on, a few things I'll need for my apartment, money for food, and there are always a few unanticipated expenses.)

probably 2 months rent. (first + security which is usally a month), +1000 for other various things would be the minimum youd want.

Yeah I've definitely been thinking about the same things lately...especially trying to gauge how long I have to work vs. being able to move in a little bit early...anyone else here stuck with the unfortunate situation of being stuck with the rent of two apartments for a month or two?? My current lease goes through the end of August, and I prob want to move towards the end of July for an early August school start date....🙁

that's rough. luckily, it's not the case for me.

See if you can get a friend/someone you trust to sublet the apartment. If your lease explicity forbids subletting... well... you can probably try work around it, but you'd have to be reaallly careful. Maybe you can talk to your landlord to see what consequences there would be if you broke your lease by leaving early? Hope that something works out for you...

ugh, I've got a few grand in the bank but I'm trying to blow it all on european/s.america vacations before going in debt for the rest of my life.

Sadly I'm not gonna get any vacation. My school starts in July and my lease here goes to the end of August. Plus I just got $800 bill to fix my car and I still have $3000 to get rid of on my credit cards. (Gotta love those interview flights!) If I'm lucky I'll be 100% debt free by the time class starts, but it's gonna be hard to also save an extra $3k for moving and settling in!

yeah same here, except its China/Taiwan for me. i decided earlier this year that i wouldnt try to save much since the 6 or 7k I would be able to save is nothing in comparison to the 150k of loans i will take out. i say go on the trips, it's gonig to be a while before you have the opportunity again.

Move-in: Security Deposit + Up to 2 months rent
If you have no/crappy credit - deposits for utilities/cable/etc.
Furniture/appliances/etc
Expensive runs to WalMart/Target etc for stupid crap like 409, paper towels, etc. - adds up fast.

I'm trying to discern a figure as well for my NeedAccess.org schools. They want you to estimate your summer and fall expenses as well as your moving expenses. Would anyone care to share the figure they will/would use for moving expenses and give the breakdown? I would hate to underestimate if it will affect my eligibility for need-based aide, but I don't want to use a ludicrous value either.

Blowing all my money on Iceland. Saving nothing for the fall. Getting my parents to help me move. And praying for the best.
