Hello,

I have a year of prelim IM and will be starting a PGY2 psych program in July. I have a few months to prepare, and I am done with Step 3.

What adivce or tips can you all give for a person who will be starting psych as PGY2 with no psych during prelim year? I am currently trying to read the Mass General Consult Psych text. Would Currents or another book be better?

I would go to the psychiatry books sticky and get a couple of texts to read this spring and summer. While your medicine background will come in very, very handy, unless you've been keeping up, you're likely way behind on psychopharm and treatment of the psychiatric inpatient.

If nothing else, familiarize [i.e. start to memorize] the DSM, and start on psychopharm - hard. The Mass general c/l book is great....for c/l. You're going to be doing a lot of inpatient your pgy-2 year most likely, so look into treatment of schizophrenia, bipolar, mdd, borderline, acute mania, cyclothymia, malingering, medical aspects and comorbidities related to the psychiatric patient, delusional disorders, substance abuse/MICA, management of the violent patient, psychiatric emergencies, seizure disorders, control of status epilepticus (you hopefully remember this from medicine), use of PRNs, pharmacological interactions with common medical medications, the mental status examination, basic psychiatric interviewing, the neurological exam, (huzzah on your already established ekg reading abilities), management of acute intoxication states, management of overdoses, and other fun stuff.
Most of that stuff is for inpatient and call.
