Are there any disadvantages/advantages to starting in the semester beginning January (2012) vs September/August 2011? I could do with taking some time to earn some money, and the few extra months could really help.

In term of writing the USMLE steps, is there any difference (even if just convenience-wise)?

Also, in terms of residency start dates is there much of a disadvantage (do they all start in the summer)?

thanks!

if you start in january at SGU you'll get more time to study for the steps, you'll ve more time to work on your applications and you'll be able to take a month off just for interviews if that's what you want. the only disadvantage is that if it was Aug 2011 vs Jan 2012 you'd graduate 1 year later. But Jan 2012 and Aug 2012 classes graduate at the same time so at sgu you'd be able to drop some classes during one of your semesters and retake them and still graduate in 2012.

I was in the Jan class and was really great full about the extra time to study for the steps and to get ready to apply to residencies.

all residencies start on July 1st.
