Hey everybody, I just finished up my 3 summer science courses, and now I'm getting prepped for my junior year. I know I'm getting ready for the MCAT come spring, so I wanted to try and get a grasp on where I am class and GPA wise so I know how far I have to go to make this work for me. Right now, my GPA is absolutely terrifying me, as I have a 3.1. This is from my having my freshman semesters being 2.835 and 2.932, and my sophomore semesters being 3.134 and 3.456. With my summer classes I just got done with, I took Physics I and II along with General Chemistry II to finish out my prereqs, and got a 3.133 (A- for Physics I, B for Physics II, and B- for Gen Chem II). I'm really frustrated that my GPA hasn't gone up as much as I had hoped, as I was hoping to crack 3.3-3.4 starting my junior year after my crash and burn of a freshman year. My problem seems to be that I can consistently get Bs for grades, but have only gotten an A once in a science class for Physics I (an A- at that). I'm not as good with the tests in my science classes, as my grades are held up moreso by my labs, problems and homework, than the test grades (usually ranging from mid Cs to high Bs).
With the MCATs soon approaching, I know if pretty much don't crack into the 30s I'm pretty much screwed, so I'm trying to start prepping this semester before taking the MCAT class in January till March/April. What I need to know is, what should my next steps be in order to give myself the best shot at getting into med school? I already know that I'm beyond help for the very best ones, and I kind of already decided I didn't want to try for those, namely because I already had some in mind. I'm looking at an even mix of MD and DO schools, because lately I've talked to a few DOs and DO med students, and from I've gathered, I'm becoming more interested in DO schools than I was before. I plan on becoming a family practice physician, and hopefully can integrate some more nutritional, exercise-based, and "holistic" aspects into my practice besides whatever I'm taught throughout med school. So can anyone give me some sound advice about what should be some of the next few steps I should take to help me keep afloat? Anythings helpful at this point, just wanted to get more opinions than I've been given already. 😕
