I'm sure it's a fairly common story, but I'm considering pursuing an MD after having been a software developer for a few years.
Here's my story:
I attended to a private university for a BS in Computer Science and graduated in 2006 with an abysmal 2.5 GPA. Outside of a few basic gen-ed courses (Chem I&II, Physics I&II, Calc I,II,III) I don't have any science courses to my name. I went to school with no real direction or motivation other than needing to do something with my life after high school. I liked playing with computers, I understood them pretty well, so I went with that.
As it turns out, it was beyond the wrong major for me. By the time I realized (can't really make any judgments for the first two years of gen-eds) that it wasn't for me, I was in too deep to turn back so I stuck it out and fell into depression and apathy. By the end of my 4th (final) year, I was barely attending classes and managed to graduate out of sheer luck. I've spent the past 4 years paying off my school loans, working as a software developer, and will have them completely paid off in a little over a year. I'm moderately successful as a developer, but it is by no means where I want to spend my life.
So once I have my loans paid off, I'm considering going back and 'starting over' so I can follow my true passion. Since my BS isn't particularly relevant to the MD career path, and my GPA was so poor I'm looking at going for a second BS and following the general path as if I were fresh out of high school (I'm 26 now).
My only real question is on the calculation of my GPA when I would be applying to med school. If I were to obtain a 2nd BS, would I be able to ignore the GPA of my 1st? Additionally, if anyone has any thoughts or comments it would be greatly appreciated.
