i've been to sites like salary.com which give the average salary of a dentist...but i would like to know what will be the starting salary of a dentist once he's out of the dental school,especially in east coast and in the midwest???

Realistically you'll find a range between 50K and 150K depending on the type of practice your in (private practic vs. clinic vs. "HMO Dental Mill"), location (higher numbers typically (salary) in urban areas than rural areas - just remeber cost of living differences though), and number of hours a week you work. Average seems to be in the 90-100k range for a 4.5 to 5 day week - atleast that's what the going rate in my neck of the woods (Connecticut) tends to be.

i'm just inquisitive, on what basis do dentists hire a fresh DMD/DDS with 0-1 yr experience...will it be their performance in the dental school or what is it that one lands with 150k and the other with 50-70k....??

I can say in NC (technically east coast, though also considered the south) is:
>80-100k for public health (plus potential loan repayment programs)
>100k+ for an associateship or partnership.
80-100 is generally a bare-bottom here. Offers of 150k+ are not unheard of. And the cost of living is very reasonable.

Those numbers may change now with our class (graduating 2006) taking the new CITA/ADEX exam, though, as NC is accepting the results from that exam when given in other states...

Is the job market really that tough in socal? I am a socal resident but go to dental school in the east coast and am definitely returning back there in 2007 to practice. What does one do to get that every so sweet associate position with an option to buy?
