First, being a new member, I'd like to say hi to everyone and a big thank you for excellent threads, posts and advice in general! 👍

I am from Croatia, finished med school in July, and I'm currently volunteering on a cardiac surgery dept. (my area of interest) waiting for my internship to officially start.

I've started learning for the USMLE step 1 about a week ago and it's all just a bit intimidating because I took anatomy/biochem/micro/immuno... years ago and it seems that the knowledge that was once there simply evaporated, and I don't know where or how to start.

My idea was to create this thread so I could gather advice, encouragement and pretty much any good info from you good people out there! 🙂

1st question, is it even remotely possible for an IMG to get in a surgery training program? I've heard all kinds of stories that were pretty discouraging for me.
2nd question, I've started with Behavioral sciences, the High - yield book. This is definetly my weakest area, since we don't cover that as a subject in Croatia. Does this seem as a good starting point?

hey there,

for tips for USMLE Step 1 study resources and experiences, please visit the USMLE Step 1 2008 Experiences and Scores thread (should be just a few threads below your post).

For info on chances in matching in surgery, you should check out the Surgery forums. There is a lot of good info about match statistics as well as other threads created by IMG's asking the same question.

sorry to punt you to other resources, but the above mentioned threads will be able to answer your questions much better than i could. good luck!
