www.dentaltown.com is an invaluable resource for this. Personally I plan to assocaite for a maximum of 2 years depending on a number of factors. Most likely I will buy a practice and take that over (from what i've read this way is much easier than starting from scratch). Cost to start a practice can vary from $75000 to around $1000000. About location: go somewhere that is in need an somewhere where you office can actually be located easily 🙂.

I plan to associate as well for a year or two. Mostly because I want to have the chance to practice in a different location for a bit before settling in one spot for awhile. Perhaps work in a community clinic...something like that. When I go into private practice, I imagine it would be best to buy out someone who is retiring from the profession.

My uncle attended University of Florida School of Dentistry and after about 4 years as an associate, bought his own practice. Now hes living rather well with a nice house, beautiful spanish wife he met in South Beach, Miami Florida (isn't this a great place to meet a wife?), and hes living up the good life. Its a nice motivation to pursue a dental career  ...KIDDING! Bottom line, it doesn't take long to aquire the funds and contacts to begin a practice.

I'm from Tampa. My predental society had a new practice consultant from Sullivan-Schein (the company that sells dental equipt.) come and talk to us about what happens when you get out of dental school. The guy said in our area it will typically cost about $150,000 to start a new small practice with about 2 chairs. However, my dentist said he would think it would be higher than that. Hope this helps. 🙂

how did ur uncle get his 1st clients? thats what i am concerned about...

How did he get his clients? Well for starters he was pretty active in the community, ran a youth basketball league (lots of kids=lots of teeth work), and is pretty personable, a good quality to any dentist. With a little advertising and some hard work, he was and still is able to run a very profitable practice.
