Has anyone researched this or know where this info might be located?

I'm interested in startup costs and annual expenses involved in having a small private family practice in a rural town or suburb (GP/OBGYN). It would be in Oklahoma if I decided to go this route, but I would appreciate info about any region.

I know there are countless factors, but any ballpark info is helpful.

Thank you,
Johnny

You're better off posting in the Osteopathic/Allo forum or better yet in the Family Pratice forum...

I agree. Post in osteopathic forum or Allopathic.

But in a rural area or none rural, I am guessing a young physician/new grad can join a pre-existing physicians office (maybe one retiring/or one setting up shop). Or just lease/rent/buy an office and set up shop solo. I am guessing each state and city has different rules on bus. lic.

There are consultants making good money advising people on this and other startup issues.
Nobody will be able to give you a good 'number'. There are so many issues that go into this question including
- real-estate buy or lease
- equipment buy or lease
- staff expenses (are you married to a nurse you can use to hold your staffing cost down the first year or two)
- expenses to get on the roster of managed care plans
- practice IT. EMR/electronic billing (in-house/purchased service)

You might not want to start a practice fresh out of residency. A relative of mine has worked for another FP practice for 4 years before he now opened up his own shop. There are so many things you don't learn in medschool or residency, with a couple of years of experience you can avoid potentially costly mistakes.
