So I was talking with a fellow student today about applying to OMFS externships and I mentioned some of the programs I was looking at (UW, Carle, and Oklahoma). He mentioned that it would not be a good idea to go to Oklahoma since they require the WREB. I did not understand why this mattered since I was under the (false?) impression that you could go to an OMFS residency anywhere and work under the program's license. I looked online and sure enough, Oklahoma requires the WREB.

Here is my question: Is Oklahoma the exception in that they require WREB exam for applicants, or is it the norm for programs to require certain state licensure exams? Since I will be taking the NERB, can I only apply to programs in states that accept the NERB?

Thanks guys 🙂

You will be granted a residency license without taking any clinical dental board exam. This means you will be able to practice under your program regardless of the licensing exam you took. Unfortunately, you will not be able to moonlight unless you have a full state dental license.

and if the program allows it, which almost none of them do.

Thanks for the reply. This was my undertanding, and could not find a clear answer online (hence the post). I wonder why Oklahoma requires the WREB then... I'm not too concerned with moonlighting, so no concerns there (as of now at least).

Maybe your friend meant after graduating from OMFS. If you want to practice in the state of Oklahoma that requires WREB to practice you will need to take the WREB to get the dental licensure since you only will have taken the NERB. As for applying you can apply anywhere.

Its pretty clear that in order to apply to Oklahoma's residency program, you need to take the WREB.

From their website:
"Applicants must be eligible for state licensure (Oklahoma accepts WREB only) and have completed a dental program accredited by the American Dental Association, in addition to successful completion of Parts 1 and 2 of the National Boards, applicants must have a D.D.S. or D.M.D. and ACLS/BLS."

does "eligible" mean that you passed the WREB though? legally, I'm eligible to become POTUS but it doesn't mean that i have to be prez

You should have been a lawyer!

I'm gonna guess you have to pas the wreb to be eligible for state licensure. Luckily that's the easiest board to pass (at least as of 2012)

budding os people-
i remember seeing this on a few residency websites when I applied (some of the midwestern programs). i believe the clarification was - to be ELIGIBLE to SIT for the exam, ie to have completed all necessary components of the dental curriculum that make you a candidate for eligibility. Back in the day, most of us had residency/training type licenses while in residency. i don't remember any program making PASSING a regional test a requirement for application.
but maybe times have changed.

Lol, good to know.

Hi guys,
I pretty much have a similar question as stated by Bereno. If you have only taken the NERB (CDCA now), and wish to goto a OMFS residency program in California, I mean even as a oral surgeon your still a dentist so I can definitely see how you may have to pass the WREB before graduating from a residency program and wish to practice in that state? Any feedback greatly appreciated.

You DO NOT have to take the WREB exam to do a residency in Oklahoma. However, you must have a current dental license from any state to be eligible for a residency permit.

This NOT true ! You do NOT need WREB. You must have a license from any state and then you are given a resident permit!!

You do NOT need WREB. You are given a resident permit if you have a license in another state after taking the jurisprudence exam!!

Are you at that program? May be true in general but programs can be more restrictive than the state if they wish.

I called Oklahoma. They prefer that you passed the WREB, but it is not necessary. Without the WREB you cannot write prescriptions or act as an attending.

That's good to hear, but how could you get through residency without writing prescriptions?
