How many state licenses are you guys maintaining?

I have four active at the moment though I haven't used more than one of them in the last 5 years. It just seems like it's so much trouble to get these things that I continue to maintain them just in case something were to happen and I needed to suddenly do locums.

I'm currently renewing a TX license and I've never worked a day in TX in my life. I got it years ago when TX was hot and I was considering moving there during the EM FSED gold rush, but then thought better of it. However, it took me close to a year to get the damn thing.

Also, has anyone gotten a state license using the IMLC? I don't remember that being a thing last time I went through a licensing application but it appears to be a fast track route to getting state licenses if you are already licensed in a qualifying state.

You have to have a clean license to use it. So, anything in the data bank, sorry, you be outie!

NY, TX, OR, CA, and considering WA via the compact while my databank is still clean. OR was the most annoying to get, TX not that bad except for the long wait. Spent less time studying for the TX exam than doing all that OR nonsense.

Very little cost to maintain them relative to how much we make so I plan to keep all mine forever. You never know what will happen...

kept my MI license since I had already got it during residency (needed for moonlighting), which is the easiest state license to get and maintain, in addition to TX. Don't plan on doing locums out of state/travelling so don't see the need for additional ones.

Is there any repercussions to letting a state license expire? Does it make it harder to obtain a new license at another state? I remember one state application asking if I had any expired/inactive medical licenses.

Nah. Most will have a set amount of time that you can re-submit your renewal application without having to go through everything again. It's usually anywhere from 6mo-1 year. If you go over that then you have to submit your application from scratch all over again.

Main negative is if you ever return to that state they may make it more of a pain to re-apply for that license. Not a huge deal.

You can see if you can inactivate it - sometimes this can be done pretty cheaply. In addition, look at alternative statuses. CA for example you can convert a license to a "volunteer" status license, which just means you can't work for money in CA until you change it back - cuts the cost to like $30 every 2 years. But changing it back is basically instant if you ever move back.
