i mostly lurk in here, but i see a lot of people talking about how much more likely they will be to get in somewhere in state vs. out of state. so, i am actually somewhere in between... i grew up in michigan and went to college there, but last summer i moved to north carolina. you need to have lived in NC for a year to be considered a resident, which will happen at the end of july-- right in the middle of my application process. on top of this, my parents don't live in michigan anymore, they moved to california last year so for some things my address is listed in california! :scared:

so am i just a nomad? will this affect my chances of getting in? FYI i don't want to go to med school in NC or MI (unless i get into U of M which would be a miracle, i'm not counting on it lol).

Where is your Driver's License from?

Download the residency questionnaire from each state and see if you fit any of them.

Double check whether it would be helpful for your parents to claim you or not, in some states that helps, but do you really want to have to be from CA?

Review that SC form and see if you can do everything needed to meet their requirements.

Yes, if you are a state resident NOWHERE, it will negatively affect your chances of getting into med school, since for the vast majority of people, the state schools are the easiest to get into. For what it's worth, I think you should strongly consider trying to get NC state residency, as UNC is a good med school and the tuition is reasonable, vs. many other schools. You need to get either Michigan or NC residency, if there is any way you can. Either keep your Michigan residency or establish NC residency...if you changed your driver's license and address to NC, you are probably going to need to become a NC resident.

i know that you need to have lived in NC for a year to be a resident there. what i'm saying is that my residency will switch over at some point during the application process. when i start writing my application i think i will still be a michigan resident, so i guess i should just put that and not worry about the fact that it's going to change?

pretty much all of the schools i want to apply to will be out of state anyway so i guess it doesn't matter much, right?
