State schools friendly to out of state students

UVM

OHSU

NOT LSUHSC (Shreveport or New Orleans) unless your parents are alumni.

isnt U of M=Michigan
At least instate we call Michigan U of M 😛

My bad, I hear Michigan as UM, so I thought U of M was Minnesota. My bad yo.

OSU
While there for the interview they related a story about the new dean. He used to call OSU an Ohio funded school, then he called it an Ohio supported school, now he calls it an Ohio located school. Plus you can gain residency after one year, or immediately if you are married and your spouse gets a full time job in Ohio.

Baylor
UTSW

Other TX schools, sorta, but not really.

VCU/MCV, I will agree with dstn2bmd. They routinely accept about 44% of out-of-staters. Really stinks for the in staters. I think they have the highest rate in the countyr for out of staters. Not fair to the taxpayers of Virginia, afterall it is a state sponsered school.

Oh well, I guess they see it has a means to get out of the budget crisis.

GOSH I HATE MCV. Sorry, had to vent for a moment!, Whew, that felt good, now I am back to being my old sweet self😛

UPitt isn't really a state school...in fact, it's a private institution with previous ties to the state that's why they take a SLIGHTY higher number of in-state vs. out-state.

Baylor isnt a state school, its private and accepts around 25% out of state.

Pittsburgh is some sort of hybrid I believe.

UTSW only accepts 10% out of state. Not out of state friendly at all.

I think Iowa and Wisconsin too

Regarding medical schools, in-state/out-of-state is sometimes meaningless. Some private schools accept more in-state b/c of state mandate than some public schools. It's best to check each schools #s and proceed w/ caution. "Favorable out-of-state" often means a 1 in 10 chance for an interview at best.

And VA schools are not the highest % of out-of-state accepted, UVM is over 70% out-of-state...

with 16% california residents, I'd say that Penn state gives at least SOME consideration to out-of-staters

New Jersey med schools seem to give preference toward out-of-staters who attended UG in NJ.

I received an invitation to interview at Penn State recently. They gave me two possible dates - Dec. 19th and Jan 14th. I'm supposed to be out of the country on Dec. 19th, so I scheduled my interview for Jan. 14th. Do you think I should try to rearrange my plans (not to mention lose quite a bit of money) to make the Dec. 19th interview? I'm just worried that waiting almost a month to interview could adversely affect my chances. Other people have told me not to worry about it since they probably won't be making many decisions during that month because of the holidays. What do you think? 😕

Druber,
I am waiting anxiously to get an interview from Penn State. Do you mind telling me when you got your invite and when you were complete?

Thanks!
ATLdoc

yeah i dont think you need to worry too much. im sure they are going evaluate those two dates at the same review meeting anyway. since i cant see them making a decision on the 12/19 people over the christmas break.
its quite possible they can meet during the 3rd or 4th week of every month and do reviews. im not too sure about penn st. policy but this is just possibilities.

whatever the case i do not think it will adversely affect your chances of admissions if you take the later date.

ATLdoc,
My application was complete around the middle of October and I received my interview about a week ago. Hope this helps.
Later,
Druber
