Because there aren't enough neurotic threads already, I'm starting a new one. I put together my list of schools fairly quickly, and didn't do much background research. Actually, I didn't do any on about half the schools I applied to, I just picked all the cheap schools within a certain geographical radius. So I ended up applying to Drexel and then finding out it's an osteopathic program, plus I applied to two state schools which don't accept many out of state applicants (University of Mary and Chapel Hill). I'm considering adding a couple of schools to my list or just going with the ones I have since my best shots are going to be the in state schools whatever I do.
I think that I will go ahead and apply to Emory, since the only reason I didn't apply was that I wanted to keep the list down to ten.

My Schools: (I live in Virginia)
University of Virginia
EVMS
VCU
Dartmouth
Johns Hopkins
University of Maryland
University of North Carolina
Penn State
Case Western
Drexel (won't fill out secondary)

Ummm, wrong on Drexel. Pathetic.

Remember... you can only apply to MD schools through AMCAS... DO schools have a different application service.

Then why does my Pfiezer "Guide to Getting into Medical School" have Drexel marked as only an osteopathic school? I did forget about osteo having a different application service though. Give me a break, it's 7:30 in the morning here and I'm already at work. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that I wasn't quite dumb enough to apply to an entirely wrong school and lose the application fee.

Might want to toss that "Ruben Pfeffer" guide and get an MSAR. Never heard of it.

What is "pathetic" is that you say you already applied to Drexel, thus revealing you have no understanding that osteo schools are applied to through a separate system from AMCAS (if Drexel was osteo, you could not have applied to it through AMCAS).

I think it is pathetic that you are so terribly misinformed for someone who joined SDN 6 months ago, has over 100 posts, and has already submitted an application. Sorry if that sounds harsh this early in the AM, but so be it...

Why not add Wake Forest if you're applying around the area, plus they accept a lot more out of state than UNC...I think. If you think you might have a shot at Hopkins, then you could apply to Duke. No DC schools? I'm at work too, with coffee, hurray.

But of course, good luck getting into UNC!

Postbacker- I made a mistake. That happens when you aren't an all-knowing being like you apparently are. In case you hadn't noticed, applying to medical school is a little stressful and if that means that I panic when leaving for work because I'm flipping through the guide and think that I applied to an osteo school then it's better than going on SDN and putting down people who are only asking for advice.

Kaydubz- Thanks. I though about applying to the DC schools, but after visiting I just didn't like the atmosphere. I don't have a chance in hell at getting into Duke, but I have to try Johns Hopkins because I have an LOR from the head of orthopedics.

Yeah, well I dont really see the need to get nasty over this whole thing. Fiddlergirl, if I were you I would go ahead and get the MSAR (Medical School Admissions Requirements) I have it for a previous year and believe me, it is incredibly helpful for discerning what the schools youre looking for are all about. It will also give you a better idea of where to apply instead of just picking ten. Drexel is an allopathic medical school and does let in a good number of OOS applicants so that might not be a bad idea to apply there. It might also be worthwhile to read up on the whole process a little, might help to minimize the freaking out. 😀

Eh, I doubt that anything will minimize the freaking out. It's wierd because 95% of the time I'm perfectly calm and the other 5% of the time I start panicking over some wierd thing like applying to a "wrong school" or the one typo in my AMCAS application. Then I randomly post on SDN which seems to be my own personal form of therapy.

Haha...Ohhhh believe me, I know... 🙄

I should have been more constructive in my comments. Please forgive my rudeness...

To keep with your mid-atlantic theme, you should definitely add Wake Forest (not much talked about on SDN for some reason), as well as Georgetown and George Washington (I like GW better)...I like Jefferson in Philadelphia even more than Drexel, would steer clear of Temple...as you have already figured out, you probably wasted $ on UNC and UMD...opening up the width of your target circle, add Pittsburgh as a bit of a reach...Penn in Philadelphia would be a big reach (along the lines of Dartmouth and JHU already on your list) but your stats are good enough to have a few more reaches...New York Medical College in the NYC suburbs is a good mid range school and probably your best shot in the NYC area...

As a VA resident, you should really "kick the tires" and get to know EVMS and VCU well - these are far and away the most likely schools you will get admitted to (not saying you won't get admitted elsewhere, but...) and you really need to do your homework on these schools to maximize your chances and to be able to make an informed choice...invest in an MSAR...

Good luck.

I think I will go ahead and add Wake Forest. I would love to live in NC. I actually visited GW and Georgetown and didn't like either. As for visiting EVMS and VCU, I've scheduled a trip in July. I really should have looked at the MSAR more than I did. I was so bloody paranoid about sending the application in on time that I sent it from a hotel while doing an internship. When my little brother applied, I can definitely tell him to wait the few extra days and spend more than an hour with the MSAR.
