Stats of students interviewed by Howard

I had a 3.5 GPA and a 99th percentile PCAT, but all I ever received from Howard was the two generic emails.

What were the stats of those of you who had interviews?

Mercifully, I applied to some other schools and will be going elsewhere in the fall, but I'm frustrated by Howard nonetheless. 😕

Although Howard does think it’s important to have good grades, I do not think that grades are the main criteria they have for admissions. They want someone that can show them they can succeed in pharmacy school not only by having top grades but also other qualities. Just because you have 3.5 GPA and 99 PCAT does not mean every school you apply to has to want you.

Dude, grades are the main criteria for selection.
An applicant with high grades will have more chance to have an interview and get accepted.
I was possible to get accepted with low grades 4 years ago since pharmacy was not that competitive.

As for me, I got accepted to every school I applied to with a 3.9 gpa and 99 pcat and I even declined Howard interview since I knew they were on probation.

Please don't lie to people.

Similarly, people with your stats (3.9/99) have been rejected by pharmacy schools, as well. You can get in with lower stats. Write a stellar personal statement and gain pharmacy experience, if you think your stats are holding you back.

Why is Howard on probation? I thought that was Shenendoah? How do you find out if a school is on probation? I heard Shenendoah was on probation but that's just from word of mouth, so I don't have a trustworthy source.

Anyways, I think Howard looks for a diverse student body of different backgrounds and experiences. If you didn't blow them away at you're interview, then it won't really balance out with your stats. They're acceptance averages are pretty low:

GPA average: 3.2
PCAT minimum: 50 percentile

Most schools are usually ~3.6 GPA average and a minimum of 70 on PCATs.

No need to be hostile. I honestly think that stats that high would be a warning sign to most adcoms. What else did the student do? Were there any extracurriculars? There must be more to the application than just grades.

your stats are probably too high for them so they know even if they accept you, you might not even want to go. thats why some schools will reject overqualified students because most likely they will be accepted by a better school.

you guys need to understand for pharm school, grades and PCAT are like 80-85% of the decision. for ppl w/ lower stats, they need to have some MAJOR pharm experience or have a very interesting life story that will touch the adcom.

like i said, you are most likely overqualified for howard.

I agree with Ethio_25. I sick of people putting down Howard because it chooses to consider students not only based on high stats. I person that has 3.9 GPA and 99% PCAT score probably did not face many challenges, this does not make them more qualified than a person with average stats that had to overcome hardships.

Just a misconception.

There's a lot of people with high stats that have to overcome hardships and challenges.

People already in the pharmacy program will agree with me.

Most of you are right, these days, stellar grades would get you an interview, but extracurricular also counts. Last year, My stats were going through the roof, I got several interviews and no acceptance b'cos I did not have any volunteer hours; so to the adcoms "I was not an all rounded student"

That said, Howard is a different ball game. I understand that they usually stay clear of students with your kind of stats, but tries to give a "chance" to the ones that may not otherwise get in anywhere. This is not to say that those accepted are ignorant--far from that, but they try to help out by giving other the opportunity to give it a shot to.

In the nut shell, grades matter, but you need to prove that you can fxn outside the classroom and u have empathy to serve people w/o money being the sole motivator --yeah, right.

thats true; we all know many can do well in class and get good grades if that's all they focus on. but that's not how life works. besides school, you need to show you can handle and balance other things--work, volunteer, research.

side note: do you guys think volunteer at a hospital is good enough and not a lot of pharm experience? in my area, it is very difficult to get pharm experience unless you haev a pharm tech license.

I know a girl who got rejected by HU dental school caused she's overqualified. She went to Ivy League dental school U of Pen. Now owed $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ in student loans.
