Okay, when can you say "patient has status post..........."? Does it have to be within a year, can it be 10+ years? Can someone use "status post blah, blah" in a sentence. I hear this during rounds all the time but I don't want to ask on the time span.

The way I've heard it used, it just means anytime in the past - could be last week or 20 years ago. I usually mention the date it occurred or a general timeline as well. For instance, if someone has had a bypass operation, you might say: "history of CAD s/p CABG in 1996."

Yep, it means the patient had it in the past, anytime in the past, as in:

s/p CABG 1981 = had a CABG in 1981
s/p CABG 3/05 = had a CABG earlier this year
POD #3 s/p CABG = post-op day #3 after a CABG, e.g. had a CABG 3 days ago

what is going on in this thread. It just means it is something that occured. s/p MVA, or s/p CVA. cytoborg hit the nail on the head.
