For those of you that stayed with a student host, how was the experience? This is going to be my 2nd interview, so I'm kinda new to this. Does the student host generally pick up the applicant from the airport....or would it be inappropriate to ask?

You can ask. If a city has public transportation like a subway or light rail or whatnot, it would be best to arranged to be picked up as close to their place as possible. If there's not public transportation, a couple of my student hosts have picked me up from the airport directly.

student host services are definitely cool.

the people who do this are very nice.

they are very helpful.

and if you are coming in by plane they will usually offer to pick you up from the airport. however if they say nothing just ask. and if they are not able to provide you a ride then they will let you know how to get to their place, tho i have never heard of a student host that didnt have a car or anything like that. but thats just me and my friend who have stayed at a lot of student places.

some of the student hosts dont get compensate for their kindness from the school so its nice to treat them if you have time, if not then just let them know how appreciative you are for their hospitality.

Student hosts are great! Most live within minutes from the med school, and all of mine have walked me to the interview room in the morning. Staying with a student has helped me learn so much about the school, and I feel I've been more relaxed as a result. About the airport question, I agree with the previous posters. You can ask, but if the city has good public transportation (ie..NY, Boston) then asking would be kind of rude. You should just ask for directions from the airport, and if they wouldn't mind picking you up, then they will offer.

Don't forget the thank you gift! I think a gift is polite and it's really the least you could do. Or take them out to dinner...just make sure you thank them.
