Staying with a student host ?

I know this is early, but I was wondering if student hosts assigned by gender, a male interviewee with a male med student ?


Also, where would one sleep at host's place? on a couch in a living room?

Depends how the student hosting is set up. The couple times I stayed with a student host, I arranged it myself. In one instance, it was directed by the school (they gave you the information for several of the hosts, you contacted them yourself), and the students had an extra mattress that they threw on the floor for you to sleep on. In the other, it was on my own (through SDN, actually), and I slept on the couch in this girl's living room.

Student hosting is completely optional; I've also stayed at friend's houses and in a hotel when going to interview.

Most schools have hosting programs - run by either the admissions office or the students themselves. At my school this is how it works: when applicants are invited to interview, there is a student's email address on their invitation and a blurb telling them to contact that student if they are interested in student hosting. At that point, you email a little bit about yourself (especially whether or not you prefer to stay with a male or female student, your interview dates, and any allergies you may have). That student will send out an email to his/her classmates and find a host for you.

Most hosts tend to be within walking distance of the school and many will have a futon or spare bed for you, although sometimes it is only a couch.

i just wanted to seriously recommend staying with hosts. It's a really really good thing. One of the main regrets I have about my app cycle is that I didn't stay with a host at the school I'm attending. It's definitely not as comfortable as a hotel or a family member's place, but it gives you a rare look into the actual life of a med student at the school. That's really priceless, since otherwise all schools really look the same. It's also pretty fun, and it's nice to put a face to a school. It makes it easier to remember a place and stuff you liked about it, which is really useful when youre picking a place. Seriously, if you can, and the school allows it, do it.

Its true. A school that I probably wouldn't have liked normally because much much more appealing when I hung out with the med student, got the personalized tour, met some of his friends, etc. My host was great and made burgers with his fiance. We just chilled and watched football after he gave me the full tour.
