Hello,

I'm really depressed about my step 1 score which is a 199. I had my (like) father die about a month before and I had to delay the start of my rotations because of it but regardless i got a 199- first pass. I am a US grad in the top middle of my class, I speak 4 languages including Spanish (I'm sure this could help) and all I want to do is gen. surgery. It doesn't matter where; community hospital or Ivy league or BFE, I just want gen. surgery. Any idea on the likelihood of achieving a gen.surg. residency spot?

Any advice on how to make myself look more appealing on my application? Or what type of positions to apply for (prelim/categorical). Currently I'm in third year.

All advice and critic are welcomed.

Thanks again for your help.

Sorry friend, but i'm not sure this is the proper forum for your question.

You might want to take a look at the 2014 NRMP Charting the Outcomes (Google it). According to the data, US med grads with Step 1 scores of 199 had a slightly less than 50% chance of matching into general surgery.

I don't know enough about general surgery prelim/categorical to help you on that front.

You probably should go post about this over in the general surgery forum. However, I would say if you want it that bad and have good grades and a strong Step 2. You should have a shot. May not be where you want but it will get you what you want. Step 2 is gonna be key. You need to get up near that 245-250 range to offset that Step 1. Then, you can explain why your Step 1 was lower due to the passing of your "like" father. The story makes sense. It is all about selling yourself to them. Hard to explain a low Step 1 with another low Step 2. That is called a trend. And probably no match.

I would try my best on rotations and try and make connections. Connections are a big part of the match game too. GL
