Hi everyone,

First of all, good luck to those of you taking the STEP 1 of boards...

As we all prepare, I wanted to start a thread about classic mnemonics to help as all study for boards....

Let the mnemonic marathon begin!!!

PTT vs. PT ... PTT has T on INside - PTT evaluates INtrinsic pathway
(i.e. P "T" T)

Fluroquinolones hurt the attachments to yo bones.

Understanding is the ONLY way to the score you desire.

Memorization WILL NOT get you a good score though it may pass you.

If you understand something then there is no question that can
asked that you can not solve.

Eg. memorize times tables by the hundreds-- even thousands or simply learn to multiply.

Yeah, I suppose you could try figuring out the structure of these and then by knowing the shape of the pockets and binding sites (they all pretty much have the same charge in the pocket I assume since they bind similar things) and the 30 and 50 S Ribosomes. However, if that tactic fails, you can use this mnemonic to remember some of the classic PS inhibitors. "buy AT 30, CELL at 50." A=aminoglycosides, T=tetracyclines 30=30S. C=chloramphenicol, E=erythromycin (macrolides),L=linezolid?, clindamycin. And for the induction rate of general anesthesias (again, my nasty mood makes me want to say that you could try and figure out the blood:gas partition coefficients of these with your knowledge of Orgo and a little Dowserism): "Now, Sleep in Hell." The first letter= drug name, and the beginning of the sentence has higher induction rate (ie lower blood:gas partition coefficient drugs) N=Nitrous Oxide, S=sevoflurane, I=isoflurane,H=halothane.

The biggest mnemonic that helped for step I was this:

HOT T Bone Steak

I dont' exactly remember the mnemonic, I'm sure you can look it up on Google (its in First Aid)... but its like

Interleukin 1 - Hot (fever)
IL-2 - T cells

something like that. I had like 5 questions on that alone.

"Some Say Marry Money, But My Brother Says Big Boobs Matter Most."

Describes the 12 Cranial Nerves. If the word begins in M = motor, S = sensory, B = both. (ie: Cr1 = sensory, Cr2 = sensory..etc.).

Reiter's Syndrome: Can't pee, Can't see, Can't climb a tree.

Herpes Dx: "Tzank" heaven's I don't have Herpes.

S2,3, and 4 keep the penis off the floor.


And my favorite:
Syphilis and Argyll-Robertson pupil: Prositute pupil. It accomadates,but doesn't react.

If you are into mneumonics, Microbiology made ridicuously simple is the best of that series.

well, i had to check out the hot t-bone steak idea, so here it is:

hot= il-1= fever
T= il2= t cell stimulation
Bone= il3 = bone marrow stimulation
stE= il4= igE stimulation
Ak= il5= igA stimulation

i love these things. helpful for the little details that i forget. usmle coming up in august, so these things will help me fix this crap in my memory, i hope...
