I'm a current M0 (lol) who will be matriculating august 2017. Let me be the first to say that I am not considering pre studying for Medical school WHATSOEVER but I have heard it is important to be aware of the exam as soon as possible. Any medical students who have scored well on the exam 240+ care to comment? Or link the thread which contains the most comprehensive info.
I know it's beyond early but I just wanted to have the materials ready and my curiosity and perhaps over eagerness to be miserable has guided me here. Been surfing SDN forums and this topic has a lot of scattered information and I figured my post could somehow miraculously condense that wealth of information.

What do you mean "be aware"? There's a big exam at the end of M2 that has a huge impact on residency applications. What else do you ned to know?

Well I guess aware is the wrong term. I am aware that it exist, however I'm unaware as to how much/when the studying begins in addition to whatever nuances

You don't need to start studying for it until 4 months beforehand. Until then, just focus on actually learning the material in your classes. The people I know who tried to start Step studying early ended up performing relatively poorly in classes and the test, both.

Usually winter break of m2 is common, beginning of m2 at the earliest. Any earlier you won't have the context to make it useful

just like acing ur pre-reqs with the intent of long term retention -> high mcat
doing well in ur pre-clinical years with the intent of long term retention -> high step 1

the majority of high step1 scorers that ive talked to also aced their first 2 years of med school

Thanks for the informative replies everyone. I believe I am pretty good at long term retention. I'm a non traditional who took the MCAT 4 years removed from undergrad. I took a prep course (and now teach one) but that's mainly for the strategies.

Thanks again. I am addicted to SDN and the wealth of knowledge here. Very helpful hearing from actual students rather than anecdotal information from premeds who have as much medical education as I.
