Step 1 Expired!

I am a FMG MD/PhD and my Step 1 score expired. Has anyone been in a similar position? I've been studying my @SS off for Step 1, but it has been a long time since I've had the basic sciences.............. I really want to enter the match this year.

Suggestions?

Just for clarification- you took step 1 a while ago and that score expired? Have you taken step 2?

I am pretty sure you dont really have any other option but to retake it. I also think you have to get step 1, 2 and 3 done with in 7 years of each other so you might want to keep that in mind.

I would certainly check with someone more official that us goofballs on SDN before retaking the exam. Maybe talk to residency directors at a few programs you're interested in? I know what Instatewaiter said about only having 7 years to take all 3 steps can't be true for MD/PhD's, but I'm not sure what the rules are myself and how you being an FMG might play into it.

i mean, when you get into something you first read the instructions manual. it says right there : 7 years.

"ECFMG policy requires that applicants pass those USMLE Steps or Step Components required for ECFMG Certification within a seven-year period."

unless you wanted it to expire(if i'm wrong-sorry). still gonna be on your transcript.

did you take 2 ? 2cs?

if you have to take ALL of them, then i'm pretty sure you have no time to take them all in a short while, unless you already know the material well and doing good in tests, and are able to schedule the tests with prometric etc.

The OP stated that they are MD/PhD, so if the PhD took long enough (more than 5 years), the step 1 score could, in fact, be expired. I think that she is studying for step 1 now BECAUSE her score ALREADY expired.

The seven year period is enforced by the state medical boards. Almost all of them require them to be done w/in 7 years of each other. You can however apply for an exception. FMGs generally must complete it in 7 years.

For clarification, 7 years still works for MD/PhDs unless you dont get your research done on time. So after 2nd year you take step 1, 4 years of research (4 yrs), 1 year of 3rd year (5yrs), optional 4th year (6 yrs). 1 year of residency before step 3. That is 7 years total, within the requirements.

From USMLE website:

The USMLE program recognizes that the recommended seven-year time limit may pose problems for medical licensure for some students pursuing a combined degree (i.e., MD/PhD). It is for this reason that the USMLE program recommends to licensing jurisdictions that they be willing to consider exceptions to the seven-year limit for MD/PhD students who meet certain narrow requirements.
