Hi,
My name is David and I am new to this Forum. I am an international medical student and I am starting my last year of medical studies.
I would like to do my clerkships in the US, but I was wondering if the step1 is necessary for that ?
Some people told me that taking step 1 is a requirement, while others said the opposite. Could you please clarify it, I am confused.
Is there a deadline generally to apply for clerkships to start in September 2011 ?

Thank you for your help,

David

I think all medical schools in the US require you to pass step I before allowing you to rotate on clerkships. Not sure what your requirement would be through your medical school. It's not a rotation requirement, but a school requirement.

For electives (since most IMGs/FMGs without a formal relationship with a US school are not allowed to come for Core clerkships), the requirements will vary. Some schools DO require passing Step 1 and some do not. You will have to check with the individual programs you are interested in as to their requirements.

There is also no deadline to apply for electives that is across the board, same for all programs. However, September is a very popular time for final year visiting electives so you will want to apply as early as you can. Bear in mind that many US programs will not take foreign students, and others only will if their own students have not filled up that elective time (which means you may not hear whether or not you are accepted until a few weeks before start time).
