Step 1 score affecting match

Hi, I'm an American med student who got a 195 on the Step 1. I honored Psych, got a high pass in FP and Pass in everything else. I am looking to apply to NYC programs and am kind of worried about my chances of matching since NY has some competitive programs. I know this question has probably been posed a million times before but I would really appreciate some input. Thanks.

Where do you want to go? Any particular program or do you just want to go to the city?

Everybody thinks nyc = cornell, colombia, mt. sinai, nyu, the big name schools. There are plenty of other residency programs out there that are not as competitive. Some schools are more research oriented- I think cornell and colombia (not 100% sure) are geared toward research so no research can hurt you.

I'm like you, without the psych honors. And I'm applying in the NYC area. I got the same step1 score. What's done is done, all we can do now is do our best on step2 and go from there.

Not betting on one program in particular. I was thinking of applying to Sinai but I feel like that's a reach. I was also gonna apply to St. Luke's, St. Vincent's and Einstein. Oh and Stony and LIJ in LI and probably UMDNJ in Jersey.
You're right though, what's done is done. Right now I can only hope that I do well on my Step 2's.

What does 195 translate to in 2 digits?
I'm an M2 taking Step 1 this year and am obviously concerned about scoring as high as possible; the main program that I'm looking at requires an 80 for Step 1 as well as Step 2.

Well, if you do well on Step II, I'd imagine that showing a nice improvement could help you along substantially.

I'd say you're in better shape than someone attempting to get into a West coast program with similar scores. There are like a billion residency programs in NYC.

Well, not a billion, but you see what I mean. 🙂

I'd also guess that just being an American graduate helps your cause, considering 40% of residents are FMGs.

I'm sure there are a lot of people curious about this, so don't hesitate on asking. Residency appications are one of those great mysteries. If you can get a feel for what where you're going to land in the applicant pool and know you want to end up in NYC, a little strategic ranking could also benefit your cause.

Just out of curiosity, are you an allopathic student or an osteopathic student?

I always thought that an 80 was a good score but if that's what you got and are concerned about NYC programs then I better revise my expectations. However, I still think that an 80 should be acceptable at all of the NYC programs with maybe the exception of Columbia, Cornell, NYU, and Mt. Sinai. Maybe I'm off base but JMH in Miami makes it clear that at least an 80 is required so I guess that any other program that has a cut off score would likely advertise that.
You've probably already done it but if not I suggest checking the particular websites of those programs you're interested in or just calling to see what their requirements are.
