Hi, I realize that there is ample data out there on step 1 score needed for anesthesia, but what I struggle to locate is data based on specific programs or tier of programs (i.e. score needed for top tier programs like Penn, MGH, Duke vs mid-tier and low-tier programs). To be competitive for the top tier programs, is a 240+ step 1 score essential? There seems to be a wide range of scores of successful matches. I know a person who matched from MD program with 224 into a solid program in major metro area, as one example. The data on FREIDA is marginally useful with most programs listing ranges from 220-250. Pretty big range. Any insight would be most welcomed. Thanks.

At our program (upper-mid tier in South), we used relatively strict Step 1 filters. It went from 230 to 235 in the last couple years as the applicant pool became more competitive. Of course, that’s not all of the application - it could be overcome with a strong Step 2 or a solid note/phone call from a writer. Probably 90% of our interviewees were above it. Of course there are personal anecdotes of those with lower scores, but we don’t know the full story of his or her total package.

If we used such a filter, I am sure the most competitive programs do as well. There are a TON of applications that come in (nearly 80 per spot for us).

I would say it depends on where you're coming from. For a top program you're at a lower tier school, probably need about 240s, 250s but if same geographic area and name brand school with research and letters then 230s or 220s may be okay. It really depends.

Usually programs have a cut off, but this tends to be "low" even for "top tier programs". Some programs care more about score than others, and others care more about other things. MGH/Columbia care a lot about research. You can have avg step score and still get in with good research, where if you have good step, and poor research they wont even interview you. Other programs can have cut offs of 245+ for interview, so even if you have strong research they won't be seeing you. Then other things that change this is if you do away rotation there, then usually they take a look at you even if below cut off. So it various a lot

I did a residency in a larger Northeast program and there was a soft cutoff of around 240+ that was waived for factors like you did an away, went to the associated med school, or knew someone when it came to offering interviews.
