so if u are an avg graduate from a top 50 US med school, what kind of score will you need to secure a internal med. residency spot in dc or california?

Seeing as there are a bunch of IMG's in most cali categorical medicine programs, probably not that high.

Yeah, internal medicine is not really that competitive to get into- as a US grad you should be pretty set assuming that you haven't failed step 1. Now if you're looking at a top program like hopkins in baltimore or UCSF in cali you want at least a 240 step 1 plus a bunch of other pluses to have much of a shot.
 
What sort of program are you looking for a high powered university based, university affiliate or community?

anyone with any insight into UCSD IM?

their fellowship match is strong so i would think a decent score would be necessary for this program, as well?
