Recently received my step 1 score:239. A little bummed because I definitely underperformed. I am interested in anesthesia & radiology. Will my step 1 score be an issue for matching into either of these specialties?

Thank you.

239, that is very respectable. Will get in very good anesthesia and solid radiology program.

Your clinical rotation at those places will be far more critical than your Step 1 score. They will make you or break you.

Look up the NRMP match data. They have historical and current score ranges by specialty as well as other quantifiable metrics.

You are good for solid mid tier programs in both specialties...

No. You haven’t done anything that has lowered your chances. In a well-rounded medical school career, the Step 1 score is only a small part of an application. Trying to predict a candidate’s success in the match solely based on a single score vastly overstates the importance of Step 1 in the decision-making process of recruitment committees.

That 239 isn’t going to keep you out of those specialties. Without looking at any other factors at the most selective programs you might have some making up to do. In anesthesiology, the average Step 1 score is 240 or higher in 25% of matched applicants. But it cannot be overstated that the most important deciding factors are going to be what’s in the rest of your application. Stay involved and do well on the things still in front of you and there’s no reason you won’t be highly competitive at every place you apply to.

Unless you have ridiculous red flags, are FMG, or are only applying to like top ten programs, you're going to be fine for either. Even as an FMG you'd still probably match just fine. Honestly not sure if you're a troll or not. I got a 223 and will have no problems getting into a decent IM program which is slightly lower avg step than DR/Anesthesia.
