Internal medicine as a whole isn't terribly competitive. Being an IMG makes it somewhat more difficult however. There are no set rules on what makes a good STEP 1 score. My guess would be greater than 220 to make you competitive. But that is just a guess...I have no data to back that up.

Here are a few facts:

-Passing is around 180-190 (not being very precise with the numbers).

-Average is about 218 (again, just a ballpark figure).

-IMGs have inherent disadvantage insomuch that any LCME grad with similar scores will probably be preferred. So, if you can beat the standard deviation (of roughly 23 points) for any specialty, then you should be competitive.

For example, according to the nrmp website listed above, the average for Derm is 238. If you score a 261, then you should be competitive. I used that example just for fun.

For IM, it would be 220 for the mean. That equals roughly 240 to be competitive for the upper-end programs. Although, this does not seem to be realistic for programs that regularly take IMGs, it is what you would need to be the uber-candidate.

although my sense of humor is exactly like the poster above...i just hope its that easy! thanks for the answers..bascaly what im trying to get at is how important is the "total package"-personality,enthusiasm. I am just curious if I am bounded by my score- i udnerstand a IMG getting a 185(passing)-roughly 210 is pretty much bounded by his/her score from what I understand. But higher scores than 215 then you have more playing room

Another way of looking at it is that the score will get you the interview and then your personality and full package will get you the spot. Just like the MCAT is a means to an end (for medical school interviews), so is step 1.

Step 1 matters because it manifests your grasp of the pertinent material when compared to all other applicants. If you score in an acceptable range and you get an interview, then it has served its purpose and the rest is up to you.

thanks for the help guys...so now i kinda get it...residency departments have "cut offs" generally speaking. Your scores basically help you get you through the door, but the interview can really serve as a chance to sell yourself to the program..thats what i was basically curious about...thanks
