I was curoius if anyone had any info of average Step 1 scores for some of the "top" peds programs out there like CHOP, Boston, Vandy, Hopkins, etc... just wondering. Also, I know that you often can tell if a program is interested in you. How do they usually let you know this? Do you let programs know during the application process that they are on the top of your list. Just curious. If there are any residents out there willing to talk about averages at there programs and their experiences I'd appreciate it.

These are not published and any "data" anyone tells you will be based on anecdotal experience (unless they are on an admissions committee at one of these programs or something like that). Remember board scores are only one part of an application, just like grades, research, extra-curriculars, leadership, interview, etc. Programs look at the entire application. Someone will always provide that one example of a person who scored a 185 on their boards and getting into a top program or the person who was denied at the top program with a score of 270, and it all means nothing. Many programs may have a cut-off for offering interviews, but who knows what they are, and it will vary greatly even among the top programs.

Bottom line, the better score you have will increase the chances of getting into a good program because that is one aspect of your application that will stand out. But a good score alone wont guarantee you a spot and a lower board score doesnt guarantee you a rejection. Apply to every program you would like to go to and if you feel your board score is borderline, try to make up for it in other areas of your application.

i would venture > 230? although i know many people with scores above that that were Denied interviews at top-tier programs.

programs are weird, there is a girl from my school who matched at hopkins two years ago, who wasn't even offered to interview at northwestern or uofChicago, weird. northwestern IM program tells their applicants on interview day they only interview people with a 240 or higher (or at least last year they did)

I know a person from my school who matched into a top ten peds program with a score <200.

So, who knows?

there may be cut offs for interviews at some schools but once you get an interview board scores matter very little
