Does anyone know if it's a bad idea to do CS before having done OBGYN and Paeds rotations? Would it make a difference? Even now I think I could pull of a gyne exam without having done OBGYN rotation. What about kids in the CS? Any stations with them?

Hi Pill Counter,

You don't have to do any Gyn exams or Peds for that matter. If you do get a woman you think would need a pelvic exam for example, you just write that down as one of your diagnostic tests in your patient note. In terms of peds, if you do get a peds station you will not have to exam a kid. You will have to just take a history from the mom. I took my exam back in March and had personally had neither of the two. So, in short. Don't worry about taking the exam without the rotations. It's basically an exam to make sure you have very basic skills, and it has a huge component of whether or not you listen to your patients and address their concerns...even if it means not finishing your history, physical, or parts of both!

I'm taking it this summer - before OB/GYN and peds. I've heard a nasty rumour about doing a pelvic exam on a dummy, which has me a little scared.

The phone interview and helping patients deal with grief and death have me scared, too.

there is no genitalia exam: breast, prostate, testic, gyn. Additionally no rectal either. However, I heard you should state to the patient that you feel such an exam is needed. I heard they then give you the results, but this is heresay. I haven't taken the thing myself.
From what I understand there are 3 components: english proficiency, appropriate H&P skills, and post-encounter exercises.

I have not heard there is a phone interview or a grief/bad news one. The former seems highly unlikely.

From what I've been told, several people have gotten phone interviews at the PIPES. One got two of them, in fact. The grief one is supposed to be a feared classic, too. On a good day, I can get away with all that empathetic stuff but when I know the SP is just thinking about lunch, I don't think I can pull it off.

The pelvic exam on the dummy is more of a rumour. I haven't heard of anyone actually stating it happened to them and frankly I don't believe it. It would require a doctor there to check that you were doing things right and that seems unlikely.

Well paid and registered for the exam ($1200!) so going to go in without OBGYN and Paeds and hope for the best. Good luck to everyone.
