Step 2 for OB/GYN

Current MS3 Planning on applying OB/GYN. I would like to apply ACGME BUT I haven't taken USMLE. Comlex wasn't great (below average...) so that's another issue. I know for some specialities people say that taking Step 2 even w/o Step 1 can improve your shot of matching ACGME but does anyone have experience with that in OB/GYN? I've tried contacting a ton of programs but haven't gotten a real answer from anyone. I'd like to do that if that'll max my chances. Step 1 material was a doozy and I don't see myself taking that test at this point.

If you're a year out from basic science and didn't do so hot on COMLEX in the first place, Step 1 is more likely to hurt than help your app. I'd focus on taking Step 2 and doing well. Having a good score will help you. Having a poor score would probably hurt you about the same as having no score at all.

oh yeah definitely not planning on taking step 1. But didn't know if anyone had any input on whether ACGME programs will consider someone if they have a step 2 score only. Would rather not have to take an extra test/deal with the stress of potentially not doing well if it won't help (and could possibly hurt) my chances.

While I know Step 2 scores carry more weight at many programs, I am not sure how your app would be perceived with a Step 2 score and no Step 1 score. My gut is telling me that there have to be programs out there who'd prefer Step 2 alone to no USMLE at all, but I have no proof of that. If you took it and scored well, you would likely give yourself more options... that gamble might not be worth it for you.

First off, post your comlex score. "Wasn't great" is too subjective. We are not here to judge, we need a base to make realistic suggestions.
Remember, while applying to any DO program, you have the option of whether or not to share your USMLE scores. If you feel confident in being able to take both, and you honestly think you can hit solid scores, then take both. If it doesn't work out, you can always withhold usmle scores, but improving your comlex level 2 should absolutely be your main focus, no question. That being said, be prepared for DO programs asking you if you took usmle and what your scores were. Yes, they will do it.
