Step II Step 2 recheck???

I've talked to a friend who said he knew like 5 people who tried but to no avail...I sent for a recheck anyways because although extremely unlikely, it's not impossible. So, $55 for peace of mind. But no expectations of course.
i failed step 1 with a score of 181.
i sent in the request to have the score re-checked.
of course, the only thing i got for my money and wishful thinking was a letter from the usmle saying i'd failed the boards with a score of 181.
however, i KNOW how horrible it feels to have failed so if it will make you feel better to know that you tried everything, what's another $50 on top of your other debt....

Just a thought... wouldn't it be better to fail then take it again and get a great score than to recheck and maybe pass with a 182?
I have always been confused why people would recheck a computerized exam. What do you think they will do differently the second time around? You clicked buttons on a computer to enter your answers. It's all done by a computer. I'm very confused by all this rechecking stuff for the USMLE.
Computers do make errors, which is why I would suggest a recheck if the score was completely surprising. For example, if you took all of the NBME assessments and got scores of about 250, and then got your results on the real thing and received a 181, you would probably consider a computer error. If, however, you went in with predicted scores around 190, you shouldn't be too surprised that you got a 181. The computer was most likely correct. The chance that that score will change with a recheck is probably close to zero.mpp said:
And, like someone else mentioned, wouldn't it be better to retake the exam and do well than to get a recheck and find out that you have a score that is just barely passing? I would rather have a 181 and be able to study again and raise my score than to have a 182 and not be able to retake it.
For me, I got a 196 on Form 1 of the NBME 3 days before the exam (Step 2), and was pretty confident that I FINALLY passed...but ended up getting a 173. Still, I realize that the chance of an error is close to zero, but not zero!robotsonic said:

I got a 165 the first time I took the exam.....didn't prepare well for it and kind of got overwhelmed during the test day. My 181 the second time was a big improvement but still not passing. Right now I just want to get the thing over with and a 182 would be fine. Plus I am matching this year and it would be difficult to find a program that would take me w/o a passing score on step 2. I am hopeful the recheck will give me better news but I know it's kind of a long shot.
