Step 2 requirement?

Does anyone know if most programs require a step 2 score to rank you? I ask this because I am supposed to take step 2 at end of december and am thinking about pushing it back to January, which would delay my score until after rank lists are due. So far on interviews, no one has inquired about when I was taking step 2 or suggested that I take it soon. Any info or past experience would be helpful.

There are two parts in determining the answer to your question:

1) Your Medical School: My medical school will NOT certify you for the match if you don't take Step 2 with a score for before when the rank lists are due. So check with your school to make sure there is no such restriction. Otherwise by not having a Step 2 score you already made yourself ineligible for the match by your school's own standards.

2) Programs Applied: This varies by program. Some programs will not rank you unless you have a Step 2 score when they are ready to certify their ROL. I know that UCSF is one school that is explicit about this. However, just because your programs didn't ask doesn't mean you should assume that it doesn't make a difference because the worst thing would be to find out during Match Day.

Hmmmm...if this is absolutely set in stone I may be in trouble...not taking Step 2 until after ROL are due...is this a sure thing?

I've been asking at all the interviews and it hasn't been an issue up until now (if you've got a decent Step 1) but I haven't been to UCSF yet...

This may be a stupid question, but its better to ask than to assume. Do schools who require step 2 require both CS and CK, or just CK?

At the bottom, a lot of the Cali schools do this now for all their residency spots.

There are some exceptions for things like early match or for those with really good reasons for not taking Step 2 earlier, but you have to jump through some hoops for it.

old posts say UCSF and University of Oklahoma. I think the majority don't require it for ROL
